Springtime on a Minnesota Family Resort

I knew when March was unseasonably warm and dry that we would pay for it in April.  And we did.  A snowfall early in the month brought us a foot of heavy wet snow as well as the power outages that generally accompany such an event.  Then a week of relatively decent weather.  Then another snowfall – fortunately only about 4 inches for that one.  Now here we are at the end of the month and the temps at night will be dipping into the 20’s.  And in a week, we hope to turn the water on in our seasonal cabins so that we can spring clean and be ready to have them available for Fishing Opener.  It doesn’t matter the year.  This is something we go through just about every year.

Spring is a busy time on the resort.  There’s the routine stuff of washing blankets and curtains, thoroughly cleaning each cabin, putting in the docks, cleaning up the grounds (this is a bit more involved after a heavy wet snowstorm!).  Then there’s whatever improvements we’ve planned to do – new carpeting, a few new beds, some new landscaping.  We did some major improvements to our White Pine Cabin last fall – new windows throughout, new curtains and “Florida” see-through shades.  This spring the garage next to White Pine will be getting new siding to go with the new roof it got last fall.  There’s always something to do and something to improve upon.

So, suffice it to say that we’re glad the legislature didn’t move fishing opener up by a week.  Given all we have to do as well as the cooler weather than moved in – the earlier date would not have worked for us or probably most other resorts!  Spring is here, tho’.  That we can tell.  The loons are back.  The hummingbirds will be coming soon (Mother’s Day is the typical arrival time).  The buds are popping out.  The frogs and peepers are croaking in the ponds.  This is what we wait all winter for.

So plan your spring fishing trip soon.  May and June are great times to come up to Loon Point Resort and enjoy fishing, hiking, a campfire.  And yes, even in northen Minnesota, you be able to enjoy water activities like kayaking and swimming by the time June rolls around – maybe even earlier!  We look forward to seeing you!
